Sunday’s action opened with the Intermediate Football Championship clash between Aidan McAnespies and Donegal Boston.


Donegal opened brightly, captain Darren Grant swinging over the first score of the game before corner forward Senan Carr added a second. Donegal then struck for goal which was saved at first but Sean Donnelly was there for the rebound to make it 1-2 to no score.


Carr added a free, and Eamon Blaney followed with a left-footed point and a well-taken goal to raise Donegal’s second green flag. Cillian Doherty added another point after his effort hit the crossbar and sailed over. Donegal were well ahead at 2-5 to no score.


The Macs then got on the board through Pete O’Connell, who pointed from play before adding a two-pointer free. Blaney replied with a point from a free for Donegal, 2-6 to 0-3.


Cillian Murray pointed for the Macs, though Carr responded immediately with a point at the other end. Then came a goal for McAnespies—O’Connell launched a free into the square and Sean Brennan finished smartly to the back of the net. Donegal still led, 2-7 to 1-4.


Grant responded with a point for Donegal, but McAnespies came into it with three two-pointers in quick succession—two from O’Connell and one from Murray. A foul on a mark won from a kickout was brought forward for a free, O’Connell taking full advantage with a long-range strike. The Macs, once 11 behind, had closed the gap to just one.

Donegal restarted in style. Ronan Donnelly netted just minutes into the second half. That was followed by points from Carr and Grant, four in a row, to open up a 3-12 to 1-10 lead.


Eoin Gormley and another Macs score reduced the deficit slightly. Conor Kelly was shown red, reducing the Macs to 12 men.


Donegal took full advantage. Carr and Sean Kelly added points - Carr with 2, before finishing off the scoring of the day with a fourth Donegal goal, Kelly with a fisted assist, sealing the win for Donegal.
