The Ladies Junior Championship served up a high-scoring affair on Sunday as Boston Shamrocks and Connacht Ladies played out in a wide-open clash under the heat in Canton. 

The throw-in was claimed by Connacht’s Emma Lynch, who drove forward and won an early 45, Shamrocks overturned possession and it was Clodagh Lyons who found the net to open the scoring. Connacht hit back with points from Ellie Carr and Lynda Galvin.

The Shamrocks found the net again, this time through Emma O’Connor. Jane Ward and Deirbhile Ní Cheallaigh clipped over points for Connacht. The score stood at 2-0 to 0-4 in Shamrocks’ favour.

Julie Cronin added a point for Shamrocks before they were awarded a penalty. Silvana Doherty’s shot came back off the post, but Shauna Higgins won possession back for Shamrocks and passed it off to Emma O’Connor who buried the rebound.

After the water break, Connacht made a change in goal with Aisling Kerr replacing Olivia Murphy. Claire Naughton added a point for Shamrocks to stretch their lead to 3-2 to 0-4.

Connacht hit back. Emma Lynch won a free after a solo run, and Deirbhile Ní Cheallaigh added a point. A penalty followed at the other end and Connacht’s Elizabeth McGarvey made no mistake to bring it back to 3-2 to 1-5.

Shamrocks Ciara McGovern broke from midfield and finished to the net for their fourth goal. Three more points followed, courtesy of Aoife Gillespie, Eimear O’Neill, and a Julie Cronin free. Cronin was again involved, winning a kickout and feeding Colleen Hughes for a point. Jane Ward had the final say of the half with a point for Connacht.

Lynch won the second half throw-in and pointed straight away. Shamrocks earned a 45, and the loose ball found Aoife Gillespie who struck for goal. Connacht’s Ciara Forde replied with a point.

Shamrocks struck again. Gillespie grabbed her second of the day, this time assisted by Ciara McGovern. Connacht responded with points from Jane Ward and Áine O’Connor, who fisted hers over the bar.

Julie Cronin kept the Shamrocks ticking with a pointed free, but Connacht closed in again with their second goal, Deirbhile Ní Cheallaigh finishing neatly to the net to make it 6-7 to 2-11.

Another Shamrocks goal came from Ciara Butler before Connacht replied with three well-taken points from Jane Ward, Elizabeth McGarvey, and Áine O’Connor all on target. At 7-7 to 2-14, the game was still very much alive.

Emma Lynch won a kickout and worked her way forward before finding the net for Connacht’s third goal. Ava Hartigan added a point to cut the margin to four.

Niamh Doherty and Rachel Moran pointed before Clodagh Lyons and Aisling Reynolds added two more goals to put the result beyond doubt. Connacht’s final point came from Ciara Forde, who fisted over after a swift move.

It was a scorcher in Canton as Aidan McAnespies and Kerry Boston played out a thrilling, high-scoring draw in the Northeast Senior Football Championship.

The Macs got the game going with a 2-pointer from Shane McGinley after winning the throw-in. Kerry responded quickly with a point from Joe Cooper. Another score from play pushed the Macs ahead 0-3 to 0-1.

Then came the first big blow—Ronan Buckley with a dummy hop and he made no mistake in finishing it into the net for McAnespies’ opening goal. Cooper added another point for Kerry, but the Macs pressed on, even after losing Oisín Kiernan to a black card.

Conall Devlin split the posts with a tidy effort, and a second goal soon followed - Shane McGinley hit the net after Rory Brolly found him inside with a well-timed pass—2-4 to 0-2.

Kerry stemmed the tide momentarily with a pair of points, including another from Cooper, but McAnespies stayed in control. Eoin Gormley fisted over, and McGinley added another 2-pointer off the outside of his boot. 

Cooper pointed again for Kerry, but just before the break, Bobby Walker hit the Macs’ third goal following a fist pass from Gormley. McGinley closed the half with a free to give his side a 12 point lead.

Half-time: Aidan McAnespies 3-8 | Kerry Boston 0-5

Pete O’Connell opened the second half with a point for the Macs. Kerry began to settle, Eoghan Power and Jim Lynch landing points to close the gap slightly. O’Connell responded with another for McAnespies.

Then came Kerry’s comeback. Cooper knocked over two frees before Rob Stack buried a penalty into the bottom corner. Stack added three unanswered 2-pointers to reduce the margin to a single point.

Kerry’s surge was stalled momentarily when Matthew Nee was shown a black card. McAnespies took full advantage—awarded a penalty, Robbie Croft stepped up and rifled it home. The score read 4-10 to 1-15.

Stack pointed again, but the Macs hit back through Devlin after a long diagonal pass from McGinley. Kerry answered once more through Stack. 

O’Connell then swung over a 2-pointer, followed by a point from Gormley to push the Macs six ahead.

But Kerry weren’t done. Joe Cooper struck for not one, but two goals in the final minutes to level the game—sealing a dramatic comeback and a share of the spoils.

The second meeting of the season between Galway and Fr. Tom’s was played out on a hot afternoon in Canton.

Galway had the wind behind their backs for the first half and it was corner forward Shane Meehan who got them off the mark with a pointed free. Fr. Tom’s replied sharply through two well-taken scores from Brian Cody to edge ahead briefly. Galway levelled with a point from Robin Mounsey, and from there began to take control.

Mark Fitzgerald was on the end of the next puckout and fired over a point for Galway, followed by scores from Eddie Ryan and Charlie Mitchell to put Galway up by three. Greg Thomas kept Fr. Tom’s in touch with a point, but Galway continued to stretch their lead, adding four unanswered points with Ryan and Mitchell again on target.

Thomas added another for the Tom’s, but Galway’s dominance in possession was beginning to tell. Midfielder Max Hackett added a score, and when Charlie Hackett won a puckout in the full forward line, he rifled to the net for the first goal of the day. Meehan followed with another free to make it a ten-point gap.

Mark Quinlan fired over a fine long-range effort for the Tom’s, and Galway added four more points before the break gave them a commanding lead.

Half-time: Fr. Tom’s 0-6 | Galway 1-16

Galway picked up where they left off on the restart. Hackett pointed, but Jimmy Quilty got one back for the Tom’s. Shane Meehan then found the net with a tidy finish and added two points in quick succession. Joe Flanagan pointed at the other end for the Tom’s, but Meehan struck again with his second goal to drive Galway further ahead.

Fr. Tom’s Sean Walsh finished to the net to make it 1-8 to 3-19, but Galway hit back with a pair of points, one from a Fitzgerald free. Cian Folan netted a second Tom’s goal, and Quinlan added another point, but the gap was still wide at 2-9 to 3-21.

Galway emptied the bench and the scoring continued—subs Darragh Lacey, Conor O’Dwyer, and Oisín Slevin all got their names on the scoresheet.

In the closing minutes, both sides added points, and Tom’s sub Zach Firman struck home a third goal before the final whistle.

Donegal and Kerry rounded off Sunday’s action in the Senior Football Championship, and it was Donegal who claimed the victory.

Donegal got off the mark straight from the throw-in, turning over possession from Kerry and working the ball upfield for the opening point of the game. Cory Gallagher claimed the resulting kickout and fed Stephen O’Brien, who pointed from play. Shane Carthy added another soon after from a free and made it 0-3 to no score.

Kerry’s first response came from goalkeeper Nevin O’Donnell who stepped up and slotted a two-pointer to open their account. Donegal, however, pushed on with points from Carthy, Michael O’Rowe, and O’Brien to extend their advantage to six.

Kerry kept within touching distance with points from Darragh Fleming, sub Eoghan Power, and a Joe Cooper free. A good solo run from Neil Mulcahy yielded another point for Donegal, but Kerry finished the half well with scores from Rob Stack and O’Donnell, closing the gap to 2 points.

Half time: Donegal 0-9 | Kerry 0-7

Donegal restarted with a pointed free and another from Carthy to push their lead to four. Kerry came storming back—Cooper and Stack fired over, including a two-pointer from Cooper, and Stack then levelled it with another. When Kerry added two more, they found themselves in front for the first time, 0-13 to 0-11.

Donegal responded immediately. Conor Cush knocked over a point, followed by another to level it. Then came a turning point—Jordan Morrissey powered through the defence and buried the first goal of the game to restore Donegal’s lead, 1-13 to 0-13.

Michael O’Rowe added a point before Kerry pulled one back through Stack. But Donegal struck again—another strong run and quick one-two in front of goal saw Morrissey net his second. 

Shortly later, Donegal were awarded a penalty, and Gallagher buried it into the net. Cush added two more to his tally before Kerry’s Niall O’Connor was shown red, reducing them to 12 men. Sub Paul Moran added a point to bring Kerry to 0-15, but Donegal had the last say—Cush pointed from a free.

In the dying moments, Kerry were awarded a penalty, and Rob Stack made no mistake in finishing it.

Sunday’s action opened with the Intermediate Football Championship clash between Aidan McAnespies and Donegal Boston.

Donegal opened brightly, captain Darren Grant swinging over the first score of the game before corner forward Senan Carr added a second. Donegal then struck for goal which was saved at first but Sean Donnelly was there for the rebound to make it 1-2 to no score.

Carr added a free, and Eamon Blaney followed with a left-footed point and a well-taken goal to raise Donegal’s second green flag. Cillian Doherty added another point after his effort hit the crossbar and sailed over. Donegal were well ahead at 2-5 to no score.

The Macs then got on the board through Pete O’Connell, who pointed from play before adding a two-pointer free. Blaney replied with a point from a free for Donegal, 2-6 to 0-3.

Cillian Murray pointed for the Macs, though Carr responded immediately with a point at the other end. Then came a goal for McAnespies—O’Connell launched a free into the square and Sean Brennan finished smartly to the back of the net. Donegal still led, 2-7 to 1-4.

Grant responded with a point for Donegal, but McAnespies came into it with three two-pointers in quick succession—two from O’Connell and one from Murray. A foul on a mark won from a kickout was brought forward for a free, O’Connell taking full advantage with a long-range strike. The Macs, once 11 behind, had closed the gap to just one.

Donegal restarted in style. Ronan Donnelly netted just minutes into the second half. That was followed by points from Carr and Grant, four in a row, to open up a 3-12 to 1-10 lead.

Eoin Gormley and another Macs score reduced the deficit slightly. Conor Kelly was shown red, reducing the Macs to 12 men.

Donegal took full advantage. Carr and Sean Kelly added points - Carr with 2, before finishing off the scoring of the day with a fourth Donegal goal, Kelly with a fisted assist, sealing the win for Donegal.
