McAnespies 3-9 | Wolfetones 5-13
The day’s action in the Men’s Intermediate Football Championship opened with Aidan McAnespies and Wolfetones facing off in an open, attacking contest. Cillian Murray got the scoreboard ticking for the Macs with a well-taken point, quickly answered at the other end as the Tones found their rhythm early.
A fine sidestep from Sean Brennan created space for McAnespies’ second point, slotted calmly over. An early setback followed when keeper Jack Lake was forced off with an injury, wing back Colm O’Malley stepped up into goal as sub Conor Kelly joined the field. It didn’t unsettle the side, and a kickout won by captain Sean Guirke led to another Murray point, pushing the Macs ahead 0-3 to 0-1.
The Tones hit back emphatically. Sean O’Donnell fired one into the back of the net for the game’s opening goal, but McAnespies responded with two more points—another for Murray and a fisted point over the bar from Gearoid Stones. Dara Reilly leveled things for the Tones with a similar fisted point to make it 0-5 to 1-2.
O’Malley, now in goal, did well to deny a second Tones goal, but Dylan Murtagh was on hand to pop the ball over the bar and put his side into the lead for the first time. A fine score from near the sideline by Murray had the sides level again.
However, the Tones were beginning to click. A well-worked move saw a kickout won by Cillian Reidy move quickly to Reilly, who buried it into the back of the net. A point followed, and the Tones had some daylight at 0-6 to 2-4.
Just before the break, McAnespies were reduced to 12 when Kelly was shown a black card. The Tones took full advantage, with three points in a row from Reilly, O’Donnell, and a 45 converted by keeper Mike Quinn. Stones hit back with a point to steady things for the Macs, but at the break it was advantage Tones.
Half-time: McAnespies 0-7 | Wolfetones 2-7
Lake returned to goal after the restart and Kelly resumed his role after serving his 10 minutes. But it was the Tones who struck first with a quickfire pair of points. Still, McAnespies kept battling—Stones finding the net to make it 1-7 to 2-9.
Any hopes of a comeback were dented when Reilly grabbed his second goal for the Tones, and soon after O’Donnell added another goal, flicking the ball over the keeper as a kick-pass dropped in. Quinn added another 45 to stretch the gap to 1-7 to 4-10.
To their credit, McAnespies never threw in the towel. Stones added a point and Kelly fisted another over the bar. Reilly added to his growing tally at the other end, but the Macs weren’t done yet—two quick goals from Murray and O’Malley closed the gap dramatically, cutting the lead to just six: 3-9 to 4-12.
However, the Tones had the final say. O’Donnell pointed from a free and a goal from substitute Niall McLarnan hammered home a fifth and final goal to put the result beyond doubt.
