Kerry patiently attacked and their first point of the game came from Joe Cooper. Carthy pointed another free for Donegal to make it 0-3 to 0-1 after nine minutes.

Kerry responded when they overturned a Donegal attack and Matthew Flaherty drove forward to point a 2-pointer for his side, reducing the deficit to three points, 0-6 to 0-3 after 16 minutes. Galligan added a second 2-pointer for Donegal shortly afterwards to increase their lead to five points.

Kerry's Andrew Moynihan took a solo-and-go opportunity from the middle of the pitch and found Dylan Murtagh, who drove forward from the sideline and pointed for Kerry, making it 0-8 to 0-4 after 19 minutes.

Donegal added another point after Liam O'Driscoll took a solo-and-go opportunity from his half-back line and combined with Cory Gallagher, who kick-passed the ball inside to Sean O'Donnell. O'Donnell made no mistake in pointing over. Jordan Morrissey and Shane Carthy added the next two points for Donegal to leave the scoreboard reading 0-11 to 0-4.
