Both sides opened their scoring with pointed frees, Nathan Grainger getting Galway underway before Shane Carthy replied for Donegal.

Declan Doyle won a kickout for Galway and combined with Darragh O'Sullivan before the ball found Bobby Nugent, who pointed over the bar for Galway.

Galway's Shea Ryan was fouled and quickly took the resulting free to add Galway's third point of the game. Donegal responded instantly through Cian O'Grady.

Donegal levelled the game when Johnny Heaney pointed off his left to make it three points apiece.

Galway then created two excellent goal chances. Cathal Sweeney drove forward but saw his effort saved by Donegal goalkeeper Hugh Boyle. Moments later, Cillian McDonald broke through the Donegal defence and linked up with Ciarán Potter, whose effort was also denied by Boyle.

Donegal pushed forward and Sean O'Donnell pointed for his side to put them ahead by one.

Galway were awarded a free outside the arc and Nathan Grainger split the posts with a 2-pointer to restore Galway's lead at 0-5 to 0-4. Rian Teahan added Galway's next point before Grainger converted another free ahead of the water break to make it 0-7 to 0-4.

Donegal were awarded a free near the 20-metre line and Shane Carthy pointed to reduce the deficit to two points. Galway then won a free from over 50 metres out and Grainger stepped up to convert another 2-pointer, extending Galway's lead to 0-9 to 0-5.

Galway turned over a Donegal attack and worked the ball up the field before Bobby Nugent added another point to make it 0-10 to 0-5.

Jordan Morrissey won the breaking ball from the next kickout and drove forward for Donegal. He linked up with Johnny Heaney, who buried the ball in the back of the net to bring Donegal right back into the contest at 0-10 to 1-5. Carthy then added another point to leave just a point between the sides.

Galway came close to a goal again when Bobby Nugent's effort struck the post. Cathal Sweeney reacted quickest to the rebound, but Hugh Boyle produced another fine save.

Bobby Nugent won the next kickout for Galway and linked up with Cathal Sweeney, who pointed to leave the score at 0-11 to 1-6. Donegal responded through Cian O'Grady before the half-time whistle.

The second half got underway with Donegal attacking and winning a free. Shane Carthy converted to level the game.

Galway were then awarded a penalty and Bobby Nugent stepped up to take it. His initial effort was saved by Hugh Boyle, but Nugent reacted quickest to the rebound and buried the ball in the net to put Galway back in front, 1-11 to 1-8.

Donegal patiently worked their next attack and Johnny Heaney pointed for his side. They nearly found another goal when Carthy linked up with Liam O'Driscoll, but Galway goalkeeper Owen Flaherty produced a fine save. The resulting 45 was converted by Thomas Galligan to make it 1-11 to 1-10.

Donegal levelled the game again after Johnny Heaney went short with a free and linked up with Cian O'Grady, who pointed over to make it 1-11 to 1-11.

Bobby Nugent restored Galway's lead after Eoin Morrissey laid the ball off to him.

Galway threatened another goal when Grainger and Declan Doyle combined, but Hugh Boyle once again denied Galway, saving Doyle's effort just before the water break.

Galway's Ciarán Potter was shown a yellow card and Shane Carthy pointed the resulting free to level matters once more at 1-12 apiece. Eoin Morrissey then won a kickout for Galway and the move eventually found Darragh O'Sullivan, who pointed to edge Galway back in front.

Carthy converted another free for Donegal to leave the sides level again at 1-13 apiece before Conor Kelly pointed to put Donegal ahead by one.

Galway responded strongly, adding three unanswered points. Cathal Sweeney accounted for two of them, while Bobby Nugent added the third to put Galway back in control at 1-16 to 1-14.

Donegal had a late goal chance when their initial effort struck the post. The rebound was picked up by substitute number 18, but his shot was blocked before Galway won a free for Donegal picking the ball off the ground.

Galway finished strongly with points from Rian Teahan and Declan Doyle, who fisted his effort over the bar. Substitute number 14 added Galway's final score of the afternoon before the referee brought the game to a close.
