Rivalries Sure to Produce Some Great Games
Cork v Christoper’s, Sunday
1:15
We have a Rebel Rivalry of sorts when Cork and Christopher’s meet.
It has been Christopher’s who have been the team with Cork connections who
have been to the forefront of affairs at senior level, while Cork have been on
the wane. Cork’s glory days of the early
2000’s when the rebels won two Boston and one North American Championship are
long behind. Christopher’s famously won
the Boston and NACB championship in 2009, and since have been in the mix while
Cork have languished at the lower end of the table. Following last weekend's defeat to McAnespies, Christopher's need to get back on track to remain in the hunt. This year Cork are on track for better
things, and have a team that includes players of the highest caliber. The Corkmen would love nothing more than to put one over on their opponents. Joining home based Mike Moynihan, Mick Lyons,
and John Wycherly are Cavan’s Packie Leddy, Louth’s James Califf, and
Skibbereen’s Donal Og Hodnett.
Christopher’s will not be willing to let their rivals put one over on
them. The forward line is manned by
Daithi Casey and Chris Brady, Dr. Croke’s clubmen who also have had a run on
the county field with Kerry, and the back line is sold with Chris Murphy, Brian
O’Regan and Paudie Kenneally. The
American born Kenneally is having a great season at senior level this
year. There is sure to be a great game
of football in store as the Munstermen clash.
Wolfe Tones v Aidan
McAnespies, Sunday 5:00
The final game on the schedule sees the Red and Blue of
South Boston meet. Wolfe Tones are still
on the quest for a Boston senior football championship, while McAnespies have a
slew in the trophy cabinet – almost an equivalent of Manchester United and City’s
blue and red rivalry. The Tones have not
been the dominant force that people expected early in the season, however, they
have risen to the occasion when the chips have been down. Notably against the Connemara Gaels and then
rebounding against Donegal after Cork pulled off a surprise win. The team has hardly a weak spot, Cormac
Joyce-Power, a player of inter-county caliber with Limerick, is coming off the
bench. The team is loaded with
talent. Monaghan man, Pauric McGuirk,
Kieran Lynch, and Brian Kinnahan are part of a solid back line, while James
Doyle of Laois fame, and Meath’s Mike Newman, join home based Marty Farrell
(Down), Barry Grogan (Tipperary), and Collie Carr (Dublin) in a high caliber
forward line. While McAnespies are not
as high flying this year as in years past, the current Boston and NACB
champions are as good as any. On last
years championship team were Gareth O’Neill, Niall Gallen, Colm McCrory, Sean
Cournane, and Marty Bogue, who will not want to give bragging rights to their
opponents. Also in the side is Monaghan
prodigy, Daniel McKenna as well as 6’ 3 Laois footballer, Donal Kingston and
former Tyrone footballer, Colly Donnelly. Emmet Bradley has also joined the fold, an up and coming talent from Maghera who is being courted by Aussie Rules clubs. This is sure to be another humdinger that is not to be missed.
Galway v Fr. Tom
Burke’s, Saturday 5:30
Hurling fans will also be treated to two games, one on
Saturday evening between Galway and Fr. Tom Burke’s. In the Boston hurling world this is as
intense as it gets with both teams of heavy east Galway influence. The rivalry said to sometimes carry over to
Galway itself when players and members return either on vacation or on a more
permanent basis. One of last season’s
stars for Galway, Kilkenny man Eoin Guinan is back in the fold, while Wexford
countyman man Stephen Nolan mans the half back line. Stephen Brown and John Moylan, as well as Guinan will
feature in a forward line that Tom’s will have to work hard to close down. The Tom’s side features some stalwart
players. Seamus Higgins, Ciaran Moore,
and Donal Moore are veterans of countless championship campaigns, while Paul
McGrath and Eanna Murphy man a quick midfield that keeps things moving. Given any sort of room forwards Shane Howley,
David Maloney, and Tom Corcoran will punish you. Another rivalry that is sure to produce
fireworks.
Of course, there is plenty of other top quality action on
the slate. The Gaels and Shannon Blues
met at 4:30 on Saturday. The Blues are
flying high this year following last years disappointment of missing out on the
playoff’s, while the Gaels side has some match winning players. On Sunday Donegal will fancy their chances
against Kerry. Kerry are enjoying a
season where they have their first shot at playoffs in many a season and
Donegal are one of the teams favored to lift this year’s senior championship
trophy. The senior hurling championship
pits the two clubs that have dominated Boston hurling over the last several
years when Wexford and Tipperary meet at 3:45.
Plenty to look forward to as the games become do or die affairs!
