Sam Maguire to Tour Boston

 will be in Boston the second weekend in November.

The Sam Maguire Cup will be coming to Boston as part of a whirlwind tour of the North East from November 11 – 14. The Friends of Dublin GAA will host Pat Gilroy, Brian Cullen, along with other team members at events in the city. The Cup first travels to New York for a night and will then come to Boston for a couple of nights. This is a great opportunity to see the cup first hand and a chance to meet some of the heroes who delivered the first All-Ireland to Dublin in 16 years. Latest from the Board

With the snows now receded and St. Patricks Day behind us, preparations for the upcoming season are taking shape.  Clubs are out training and with home based registration deadlines approaching fast, panels are being filled out. 

A provisional date of Saturday, May 7 has been set for a referees course.   Current and new referees are invited to attend the day-long course at the Irish Cultural Center.

Donegal will play a junior football challenge with Westmeath New York at Canton on Saturday, April 2.  Also, there is a possibility of a Boston selection travelling to Gaelic Park to play New York in a friendly match April 9 as our neighbours to the south prepare for their Connaught Championship encounter with Roscommon on May 1.

The format for the senior football championship has been slightly modified.  The top 6 teams will qualify for the senior championship playoffs.  The top 2 teams will get a bye to the semi-finals, and quarter finals will be played by teams placed third through sixth.  The seventh and eighth placed teams qualify for the Intermediate final. 

Additionally, the 3 Junior C hurling clubs, Barley House Wolves (Concord NH), Portland Maine, and Springfield Mass. will enter an amalgamated team to participate in the Sheehan Cup.  The Sheehan Cup is the pre-championship competition for hurling clubs.  This is the first year where we will see a Junior C Hurling compeition in the Boston North East Division. 

The Connemara Gaels will be traveling to New York to participate in the 7-a-side competition.  Best of luck to the Gaels.  There is also an upcoming benefit for Jimmy Sullivan.  Jimmy is a long time member of the Connemara Gaels GFC and suffers from Parkinsons disease.  Your generous support is greatly appreciated.  Click on the image below for more information.

Emphasis on Youth as Connaughton Takes the Reins for 2009

Bernie Connaughton will retake his place at the helm of the Boston North East Board for the fourth consecutive year. Having expressed his desire to leave the position open for a new Chairperson, Bernie decided to once again dedicate himself to the task of running the largest divisional board in the NACB.

The meeting took place on Sunday, February 8 at the Irish Cultural Center in Canton and was well attended. Much has been made in recent years about the difficulties facing the GAA in Boston and elsewhere in North America, however, there are exciting developments afoot that will secure the long term health of the local GAA. Notably present was Mike Moynihan, the Youth Development Officer, who briefed the delegates on the latest developments – and developments there were on that front. There are plans for a Catholic Schools Gaelic Football league on the south shore in the spring. Also, plans are in place for youth teams in Wayland, Acton, West Roxbury, Worcester, Dorchester, and Milton. Ellen Joyce of the Irish Sports Youth League also addressed the meeting and expressed the need for assistance on the coaching front and the importance of the adult clubs hooking into the youth programs and vice versa to bridge the gap between the youth and adult leagues.

Also in attendance, and underlying the changes that are taking place were delegates representing clubs in New Hampshire and Connecticut, signs that the GAA is expanding beyond its traditional catchment area of the greater Boston area. The Barley House Wolves of New Hampshire and the Hartford GAA club were present. Each club has plans not only to develop its adult teams but also to begin underage programs.

The North American Board Finals will take place for the second consecutive year at the Irish Cultural Center. The Artane Band, formerly known as the Artane Boys Band, will play at both the Boston Divisional Finals on the last weekend of August and the North American Finals on Labor Day weekend. For those not familiar with the band, the band was founded in the Artane industrial school on Dublin’s northside, and was initially made up exclusively of boys. The band is now composed of boys and girls. The band has been a major part of the atmosphere on big match days in Croke Park since 1886. The tradition of the parade of the teams behind the band just before the beginning of the game gets the crowd going and is quite an unforgettable sight for anybody who has ever been in attendance.
