Sun July 9- Boston Shamrocks v Connacht Ladies- Ladies Football Championship

The Boston Shamrocks team celebrated their 30th year as a team with a Championship victory. Going up against their rivals, Connacht Ladies, the Shamrocks fought to the finish to secure the title and earn their ticket to Denver Colorado, this August.

The Shamrocks took an early lead with a point and goal from number 8, Caoimhe Kean and number 15, Shannon Mullen. It didn’t take long for the Connacht Ladies to wake up, and before long the score was even again, with a goal and a point to both teams.

Determined to defend her previous goal, Shannon Mullen (15) struck with another goal. Connacht racked up the points, many courtesy of number 14, Sarah Cronin, but struggled in the goals department. Just before halftime, Shamrocks number 11, Laura Mc Tighe, secured another goal for her side. The Shamrocks enjoyed a four-point lead at half-time, but it was clear from their return to the field that they understood the stakes and were not slacking off.

Continuing her scoring streak after her recent return from an injury, McTighe (11) secured another point followed by one from number 14, Maria Kelly.

The Shamrocks dominated most of the second half with possession, until a surge from Connacht changed the tone, starting with a point from number 11, Aoife Brady. The Connacht defenders worked tirelessly to keep out the speedy Shamrocks’ forwards. Despite their efforts, Connacht just couldn’t seem to get the scores they needed. Several missed goal opportunities caused high tensions and frustrated players. Their fate was sealed as the second half came to a close, and the Shamrocks took the win.

With this victory the Boston Shamrocks take home the 2023 Boston Senior Women's Championship, after winning the most out of five games. This means they will travel to Colorado for the USGAA Finals.

Long time rivals and incredible competitors, the Connacht Ladies, went down with dignity, but will surely be back with a vengeance in 2024, to get their hands on the cup.

Sat July 1- Christopher’s v Wolf Tones- Men's Intermediate Football

The Wolf Tones took the win against Christopher’s last Saturday, maintaining an impressive lead throughout. The Wolf Tone’s set the ‘tone’ early in the first half, winning the throw in and obtaining a goal at the hands of number 10, Sean Moore. Christopher’s retaliated with a point from number 13, Arthur Coakley. The Wolf Tone’s forward line was relentless, but Christopher’s goalie Patrick Kenneally held firm and made a few incredible saves.

Christopher’s number 4, Martin Coppinger, tried to keep the scoring level but as the first half progressed, scoring for Christopher’s slowed rapidly. Wolf Tone’s enjoyed the upper hand for the remainder of the first half. Their number 12, Ben Purcell, secured a point and followed it shortly after with a goal. At half-time, Wolf Tone’s kept a 15-point lead.

Wolf Tone’s took over the game in the second half. Another goal from number 8, Barry O’Connell dampened the spirits of the Christopher’s players. It seemed now Christopher’s only hope was stopping the advantage from growing. Christopher’s 13, Coakley, bagged two more points but their defeat was clear through their performance. As Christopher’s subs came on to get a run out, a penalty for Christopher’s put them closer to their rivals. A goal from Wolf Tone’s number 25, who came on as a substitute, sealed the fate of the Christopher’s.

In the end, Wolf Tone’s ran away with the game, and there was little hope for Christopher’s to catch up. The match came to a finish with a final score of Wolf Tone’s 4-11 to Christopher’s 1-7.

Kerry v McAnespie's- Men's Intermediate Football

A lively showdown between Kerry and McAnespie’s intermediate teams took place last Saturday, July 1st.  The match kicked off with a yellow card for McAnespie’s number 3, Eoin Murdock. It was McAnespie’s number 6, Niall Murphy that secured the first point of the game. The teams went point for point for the majority of the first half. While it appeared that Kerry maintained possession for the longest, their scoring was low compared to that of the McAnespie’s. Kerry’s number 13, Sean Gildan, scored several points for their side keeping them on par with their competitors. Scoring was high too from McAnespie’s number 12, Jude Campbell, who bagged three points in the first half.

The first sign of a goal was from Kerry’s number 11, Noel Kennedy. Shortly after, McAnespie’s number 11, Padraic Dillon, matched his goal with one of their own, keeping the gap between the teams minimal. The first half finished with two points between them, and McAnespie’s in the lead.

McAnespie’s pulled further ahead as the second half got underway, with points from number 14, Pat Mc Kerney, 12, Jude Campbell, and 10, Eoin Gormley. After several points back and forth between both sides, a goal from Kerry’s number 14, saw Kerry pull ahead of their competitors for the first time since the early minutes of the first half.

Each point for Kerry seemed to be met with a corresponding one from McAnespie’s. This play continued for some time before a surprise goal from McAnespie’s Eoin Gormley (10) reintroduced their advantage. This put them just one point in the lead. A point from Kerry’s number 15, evened the score once again.

Determined to cling onto their advantage, McAnespie’s number 13 put the ball over the bar with minutes left. One final point in the game saw them finish with a two-point win, and a final score of McAnespie’s 2-13 to Kerry 2-11.
