Mayo 0-6 Wolfe Tones 2-19
The Tones and Mayo met in a game of little consequence. Mayo were out and for the Tones it was their
last outing before the playoffs. It
ended up being more of a training match for the Tones, and for Mayo the end of
another fruitless senior campaign.
Mayo Battled but were no match for the Tones. |
It was all square in the early going at two points
each. Padraig Hickey finding the mark
for Mayo, and for the Tones it was Marty Kelly and Fergal Conway who
pointed. Eventually the Tones took over
the game. After Barry Grogan and Kelly
put the Tones ahead Davy Dalton made a run from corner back and netted a goal,
which settled down the side. After that
the scores began to flow. Paul Bannon,
Doyle, and Grogan extended the lead. At
the break the Tones led by nine points.
Gary Brilly Shoots. |
The second half took on a similar look and after about 10
minutes with the lead further extended the Tones felt comfortable enough to
introduce some players from the line.
Mike O’Brien, Collie Carr, Cormac Joyce-Power, and Darren McGuire
entered the fray. Carr, O’Brien, and
Maguire got on the scoreboard. McGuire
netted with the clock winding down.
Maybe not the type of game that the Tones needed leading into the
playoffs next weekend, but a chance to get a run out before they meet the
winners of the three way playoff between Kerry, Gaels, and McAnespies in next
Sunday’s quarter final.
